This church dates back to the arrival of the first missionaries of LMS on March 5, 1797. After 1815, the majority of the population identified themselves with Christianity; they formed this national Prot church, which spread from Tahiti over to the other four archipelagos. Following political developments in 1863, LMS handed its control over the church to the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society. In 1963 the church became autonomous under the name of Eglise évangélique de Polynésie française. Except for the Marquises and the Tuamotu-Gambier archipelagos where RCath come first in numbers, the Evangelical church is predominant in the rest of French Polynesia. Almost all the income of the church is collected each year during special offering services held during the month of May. This church also has a parish of over 5,000 migrant workers in New Caledonia. Burning issues for the Church today are the declining numbers in membership and of pastors; growing unemployment on Tahiti, which is crowded by the influx of islanders; the conflicts arising between conservative traditionalists and modernists; and the efforts toward independence which had been linked for a long time with antinuclear demonstrations and, since the closure of the testing sites, with the economic future of the area. On the religious scene various attitudes, ranging from maintaining the heritage of the early missionaries to rebirth by cultivating the ancient traditions, have drastically changed the religious scene in French Polynesia and given birth to dozens of different denominations and religious groupings.
