This church is the fruit of missionary work started by the Presbyterian Church in the USA in 1882. In its first period the church took roots in the milieu of the urban liberal middle class. Various educational and welfare projects were launched. A synod was established in 1950; and the church became independent in 1962. In the course of the century the church grew in membership among the lower classes, especially among indigenous peoples. In 1959 the first indigenous (Maya) presby was founded. Since then church growth has primarily taken place within the indigenous population. Today the majority in the synod is held by indigenous believers. Another factor in its growth was a ten-year major promotion campaign launched in 1972 with a view to the centennial of the church. However, in the last 20 years the serious social, ethnic, and military conflicts of the country have had their repercussions on the life of the church. At the same time the impact of the Pent movement has grown. One result of these developments is the lower growth rate of the church; another is the secession of, at least, one major group (cf. no. 2).
