In 1973 conservative members of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, the southern Presb, left to form the Presbyterian Church in America (named the National Presbyterian Church for the first year). They left because they perceived theological liberalism growing in the PCUS. They were wary of merger talks, of ecumenical affiliations, and of pressure to make the ordination of women compulsory for all sectors of the church. In 1982 the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod joined the PCA, bringing with it two educational institutions, Covenant College and Covenant Theological Seminary. Additional congregations from the Presbyterian Church (USA) came to the PCA after 1983, when the PCUSA was formed by a merger. The PCA has its headquarters and agencies located in Atlanta, Georgia. Mission to the world, mission to North America, and Christian education are its main agency work. Pastors are also trained at several independent seminaries, such as Westminster Theological Seminary or Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi. Membership is strongest in the southern USA, but churches are found across the country and in Canada.
