While before union (1977) the Presbyterian Church was liberal in outlook, the position of the “continuing” Presbyterian Church after Union has become increasingly conservative. A resurgence of traditional Ref theology has taken place. In 1991 the General Assembly repealed the approval of the ordination of women which had been introduced by the church before union (1974). Women elders continue to be admitted in a number of states. In 1982 the church became a member of the REC and withdrew from the WARC. In 1987 a new hymnbook was introduced which is used by about 50% of the congr. The church is committed to missionary work — about 130 missionaries are serving in more than 20 countries, especially in the Pacific, Korea, and India. State churches were formed prior to 1901. E.g., Presbyterian Church in N.S.W. (1865).
