This church has its roots in the history of Scottish Presbyterianism. In 1690 a Presb group denounced the acquiescence of the Church of Scotland in its alliance with the state. The protest resulted in the formation of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in 1743. In 1876 part of this church joined the Free Church of Scotland, but a remnant continued in Scotland; in the meantime, Reformed Presbyterian Churches had been established in Ireland and North America. In 1857 a pastor of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Ireland (cf. Ireland no. 4) came to Australia and founded a congregation in Geelong in 1857. From 1954 to 1979 a presby operated as part of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Ireland, but it is now independent with its own constitution. Discussion, with a view to union with the Presbyterian Church of Eastern Australia (1983-86), did not succeed.
