The union resulting in the formation of the CSI took place in autumn 1947 in Madras, only a few months after India attained independence from Britain. For the first time in the history of Prot churches Episcopal and non-Episcopal traditions united in one church. Ways were found for full mutual recognition of ministries. The constitution distinguishes three levels: local parishes, dioceses, and synod. Each diocese (a total of 21, including the diocese of Jaffna and Sri Lanka) is led by a bishop. He exercises his functions collegially in council. The Synod is the highest policy-making body. All properties and institutions are under what is known as the CSI Trust Association. The church is spread over the whole south, i.e.,in all four southern states. In addition, for the diaspora, CSI congr have been formed in the USA and elsewhere.
