With the beginning of industrialization, Prot from neighboring countries began to settle in Liechtenstein. In 1880 the Duke of Liechtenstein granted permission to hold Prot worship services and to organize religious instruction for the children of Prot families. For several decades pastors from parishes across the border in Switzerland and Austria served the small community. In 1952 a pastor was named for Liechtenstein, and in 1963 a church was built in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein. The Evangelical Church comprises Prot of Ref and Luth background; through a special agreement it is linked to the Evangelical-Reformed Church of St. Gallen in Switzerland (cf. Switzerland no. 13). In addition to the Evangelical Church, there is also an Evangelical-Luth congr in Liechtenstein.
