This church came into existence in 1987. It was founded mostly by members of the NGK, who could no longer identify with the course the general synod took in 1986 by adopting a report entitled Church and Society. They were convinced that the policy of the NGK would contribute to open South Africa to anti -Christian Communismand that it failed to appreciate the diversity in Gods creation and the necessity for the church to be indigenous. A minority of members and ministers from the Ref churches in South Africa and the NHK also joined the church. In 1988 a theological seminary was opened. The APK is a church for Afrikaners. It also exists in Namibia (cf. Namibia) and in Paraguay.
