This is a Xhosa-speaking church, founded originally by the Free Church of Scotland (in 1843). It has been active since that time in Xhosa-speaking areas in the eastern and western Cape regions. When the majority of the Free Church of Scotland reunited with the Church of Scotland in 1900, most missionaries in South Africa joined the union. A minority maintained communion with the continuing Free Church of Scotland. The church became independent in 1982 but continues to be dependent on overseas help in personnel and finances.
