In 1968 the United Church of Canada decided to phase out its work in Trinidad. In 1977 the church became entirely independent and self-supporting. Conversions of Indians have practically ceased. In the meantime Hindus and Muslims have their own schools. Today the church is faced with a strong influence of Pentecostalism.
