This church was formed in 1965 by the Union of the Presbyterian Church of Jamaica and Grand Cayman and the Congregational Union of Jamaica. The Presbyterian Church was the result of the work of the SMS (cf. above). As early as 1846, Jamaican missionaries were sent by this church to Calabar and thus became the first non-European Presb from the Caribbean islands to minister in Africa. They planted the church which became the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (cf. Nigeria no. 1). They also sent missionaries to Rajputana (NW India) while evangelizing East Indians in Jamaica itself. Congreg churches originated in 1834 from the activities of the LMS. The Congregational Union of Jamaica was formed in 1877 to give coherence to the in-dividual churches. But a financial crisis and the lack of manpower explain why the Congregational Union of England and Wales, as well as the International Congregational Council, had to be called for help. The Congreg churches later moved toward independence before ultimately merging with the Presbyterian church.
