Prot in Kiribati trace the beginnings of their church to “the coming of the light,” when Hiram Bingham II, from Hawaii, settled on the island of Abaiang in 1852, as the first resident missionary. He had been sent by the Hawaiian Board of Mission, working closely with the ABCFM. His co-workers on the other islands were all Hawaiian Islander missionaries. The ABCFM evangelized the northern region of the Gilbert Islands until handing over the field to the LMS in 1917. The LMS was active in the southern part since 1872, working there with trained Samoan Islander missionaries. After 1920 the LMS and its successor bodies (first Congreg Council for World Missions and later Council for World Mission) oversaw the gradual growth of the church which became independent in 1969, ten years before Kiribati became an independent Republic.
