This church grew out of LMS work initiated in 1859 in Matabeleland under the leadership of the pioneer missionary Robert Moffat. Mission stations were established in Inyati (1859) and Hope Fountain (1870). For many years the efforts seemed to be in vain. Until 1880 no converts were won. The first baptisms took place in the 1880s. During the war of 1893 the two stations were destroyed twice (1893 and 1896/97).After the second war the young church began to grow and educational work developed greatly. By 1927 the church had 2,276 members.
