This church came into existence in the 1830s as part of the movement which protested against the spirit of the Enlightenment and advocated the return to the confessions of the Reformation. Since 1923 it has associated as a particular synod with the Gereformeerde Kerken in the Netherlands (cf. Netherlands) but also maintains contacts with the churches in Germany and is a member of the Reformed Alliance.
