 A spiritual revival in 1868 led to the formation of a community of evangelical spirit and congregational structure in Bystré, Eastern Bohemia. Later a similar movement began in Prague which, with the help of the Free Church of Scotland and missionaries of the ABCFM (Congregational) in Boston, resulted in the foundation of the Free Reformed Church. Soon friendly contacts developed between the two spiritual streams, and in 1891 the two congr merged under a single leadership. As the movement gained momentum it became the target of discriminatory measures on the part of the Austrian authorities. After World War I the church adopted a new name, calling itself the Unity of Czech Brethren. In doing so it sought to express its allegiance to the spiritual legacy of the old Bohemian Unitas Fratrum. The church eventually also expanded into Slovakia (cf. Slovakia no. 2) and the Transcarpatian Ukraine. After World War II it gained new members especially of Polish and Slovak origin. Because of this new situation the church decided in 1967 to change its name again to the Church of the Brethren. The church is congregationalist in character but has an increasingly Reformed profile.
