In 1840 Presbyterian missionaries from the United States started missionary work on the island of Corisco. They soon began to expand into the interior. After 1901, under Spanish rule, the church had to face many difficulties. In 1952 churches were closed and pastors prohibited from working. Nevertheless, the Presbyterian Church continued to grow. Under Macias Nguema’s regime the church again experienced fierce repression, and its freedom is limited even today. In 1969 the Presbyterian Church united with the church which had resulted from the missionary work of the World Evangelical Crusade in the area of Akurenam, and in 1973 the two churches formed, together with the Methodist Church, the Reformed Church of Equatorial Guinea (Iglesia Reformada de Guinea Ecuatorial, IRGE). The Methodist Church had come into existence in Bioko through the efforts of the British Methodists. The union was ambiguous because there was no real agreement on the authority of the new church over the three preexisting churches. Tensions were therefore bound to arise. Conversations toward a deeper common understanding are underway. Since January 1996 IRGE functions as a federation of churches; its name has been changed to Council of Evangelical Churches in Equatorial Guinea (CIEGE).
