The existence of the Free Reformed Churches owes to Dutch immigration to South Africa after World War II. The churches were founded by immigrants who belonged to Reformed Churches (Liberated) (cf. Netherlands). They want to remain faithful to the Three Formulas of Unity “in a time when most Ref denominations pay only lip-service to their confessions.” They are also committed to evangelistic work in South Africa. In recent times the church has attracted members of the Dutch Reformed Church who were dissatisfied with what they considered to be a trend toward liberalism. The Free Reformed Churches maintain close relations with other Reformed Churches (Liberated).
