Missionary work was started by missionaries from the Church of the Brethren in the USA who engaged in medical, educational, and evangelical activities among the Bura in and around Garkida in the north of Nigeria. The pioneer missionaries were Stover Kulp and Albert Hesler, who arrived in 1923. The first worship service was held on March 17, 1923, at Garkida. From 1930 evangelistic work was extended to the Marghi, one of the largest non-Muslim communities in northeastern Nigeria. Further mission stations opened in Bille (1927), Chibuk (1941), Gulak (1948), Uba (1955), and Mbororo (1957). In 1963 the Church of the Brethren Mission was joined by the Basel Mission from Switzerland. The two mission bodies worked cooperatively up to 1973, when the church became independent.
