This group of 360 islands, of which only 20 are inhabited, was discovered by the Spaniard Juan Bermudez in 1503. Uninhabited until then, they were colonized by the British in 1609. Since 1968 Bermuda has been a self-governing dependent territory of the United Kingdom. Tourism (1/3 of the GNP) and offshore finance (of equal importance) place Bermuda in the top four worldwideper capitaincome economies.
Today Bermuda has 100 churches of 25 denominations including Advent, Angl, Brethren, Bapt, Meth, RCath, and Salvation Army. The first minister in Ber-muda, the Rev. George Keith, was sent in 1609 as chaplain for the Bermuda Company. This was ostensibly a Church of England ministry, but the Church of England was not uniform at that time and he was Scottish, Calvinist, and perhaps of Presbyterian ordination. In the 17th century there were largely ineffective objections to Anglican liturgy and practice before the lasting establishment of Presbyterian worship in the 18th century.
