Western Samoa is made up of a group of islands located in the South Pacific Ocean. Its agriculture employs more than one-half of the labor force, contributes 50% to the GDP, and furnishes 90% of exports. The bulk of export earnings comes from the sale of coconut oil and copra. The economy depends on emigrant remittances and foreign aid to supplement the GDP. It has been independent from a New Zealand-administered UN trusteeship since January 1, 1962.
